Funtime in the summertime....outside brunch at CanCan

Yesterday Bob, Mckenzie, Peyton and I elected to have brunch at Can Can. I'm a fan of Can Can's bar and their burgers, but this was our first brunch there. Overall, we were very pleased and will definitely return another Sunday.

We were seated quickly and our very nice waitress took Bob's and my drink orders while we were waiting on Mck and Peyton. The brunch menu offered a nice variety of items and there were many that made my short list, but in the end I decided on the ham and Gruyère crepes and was not disappointed. I believe Gruyère does not get the recognition and exposure as the great cheese that is it and one thing I love about CanCan is it's plentiful. The crepes were slightly sweet and a nice contrast to the savory ham and cheese. Peyton chose the waffles which were hot and crispy with real maple syrup and blueberry compote. He was pleased with his choice. Bob ordered the sausage, potato and cheese omelet with a side of crispy potatoes and both items were great. The potatoes are nice and crispy and a nice change from the usual home fries. Mck ordered the one dud item, the spring vegetable omelet with goat cheese. Filled (and I mean FILLED) with peas, green beans, asparagus and small lima beans, this omelet was strange and seemingly ill prepared. The goat cheese was scarce and at one end of the omelet. The amount of the vegetables could have easily filled three or four omelets and seemed odd choices (except for the asaparagus) for an omelet. However, the vegetables were fresh and cooked al dente and would have made a nice side with an entree. They were just out of place in the omelet (and there were too many of them. And Bob being the good Dad that he is took one for the team and traded his omelet for hers.

The coffee and mimosas were very good and the bread, of course, exceptional. The service was very good and it was a great way to spend a sunny Sunday morning in Richmond.

Our last brunch at Can Can was ok. Somethings were really good, others - not so much. Can Can has been getting a hard rap from the blogging community lately. Part of it may be that it's no longer the 'new' restaurant. We all have pretty high expectations of them and as a eatery settles into a long term routine and some of their focus and energy gets consumed by internal politics and the petty bickering that occurs in many restaurants. The bar situation has gotten pretty bad, service wise, but they seem to be aware of it. Let's hope they are able to re-focus and that it doesn't drift over into the dining room. Regardless, unless it completely falls apart, we will continue to eat there (the food hasn't suffered - yet) and am actually planning on hitting the raw bar with Finn later on this week.

I have really enjoyed brunch at Can Can in the past, especially the eggs benedict (yes, I am drooling even now). For us the key is to get there between 9 and 10 AM. And then we feel very decadent ordering a carafe of rose to enjoy with our meal. What happy times!
